This spring and summer we have organised new activities for families and people passionate about freshwaters and Creek. From cleaning the river, water sampling to new family learning sessions. The project aims to improve the ecology of Deptford Creek through engaging the local community in a series of river conservation events. Change will be created by practical conservation in Deptford Creek but also through education of participants bringing awareness of the river and its challenges. The project will be run along the London Rivers Week events.

WaterBlitz and river dipping - Tuesday 30th May 2023

During the London Rivers Week  we will be participating in WaterBlitz project organized by Thames21.

On the 30th of May at 13:30pm we will be taking water sample from Deptford Creek. This event is for local people, families and citizen scientists. The project aims to identify ongoing pollution issues impacting the Ravensbourne Catchment ( Including Ravensbourne, Pool, Chaffinch Brook, The Beck, Quaggy, Kyd Brook). The water samples will then be sent to an accredited laboratory for analysis. We will also do a river dipping for younger children to learn how to look at water quality via identifying living things in the Creek.

PlasticBlitz - litter picking and data collection - Thursday 1st June 2023

The Plastiblitz is annual event where community groups and Environment Agency teams do the litter pick and collect the data about plastic waste. Once plastic enters our rivers, there is no statutory obligation for any organisation or public body to remove it. This has resulted in plastic waste being allowed to accumulate in our rivers where it can then be carried out to sea. Shockingly, 80% of plastic pollution found in the sea has passed through rivers and streams on its way there. Many of our rivers are therefore effectively acting as plastic ‘taps’, allowing a constant stream of plastic from inland areas to flow into the sea.
