The story of Love Over Gold

Back in the 1980s, the phrase 'Love Over Gold' appeared in graffiti on the side of Drake House, in our neighbouring estate, Crossfields. The residents of Deptford loved the meaning and energy of 'Love Over Gold' andsoon the graffiti drew more attention - including from the band Dire Straits who lived in Crossfields Estate at the time.
In 1989, a mural inspired by the graffiti was commissioned and created by artists Gary Drostle and Ruth Priestley, with design contributions from local primary school children. The result was an iconic piece of art, showcasing issues of wealth distribution, the environment, disability and equality of opportunity. Sadly, over time changes to the area and the deterioration of the wall meant the mural could no longer be maintained in its original location.
What's happening now?
The Creekside team were delighted to be approached by an artist duo, WET PAINT WALLS, who were looking for a site for a new Love Over Gold mural, updated for the 21st century. This new piece builds on the original legacy of Love Over Gold, honouring it's themes whilst updating it with concerns about the environment and feelings about our community in Deptford. We were keen to get involved and happy to offer the front wall of Creekside Discovery Centre site.
In December, the artists delivered a workshop session with our team of local staff, trustees and volunteers to gather thoughts on the themes of environmentalism, community and the changing area around the Centre. The artists have incorporated these reflections into their piece and a new design will be ready in March.
The painting is due to take place in June 2026!
The artists:
Daisy and Ellen from WET PAINT WALLS are artists based in Deptford. They have a special connection to the Love Over Gold mural - Ruth Preistley, one of the two original Love Over Gold artists, was Daisy’s mum. Watch the film about their connection!

Funding support
Daisy and Ellen have been working on this mural project for a long time now and have already crowdfunded to cover some of the costs of the mural. Even with a contribution from Creekside, they still need more funds to make the mural a reality! All contributions will directly support the project, covering essential costs such as materials, access equipment and artist time.
If you can, please help bring this new piece of Deptford heritage to life!
