Deptford X @ Creekside - 24 July - Thursday 24th July 2025
Thursday, 24th July, 10:00-12:00 & 14:00-16:30
Creekside is delighted to be continuting our involvement with the Deptford X Festival in 2025.
This year we will be swinging open our gates over three days, inviting everyone into our Discovery Centre to explore the site, meet the Creekside team and enjoy exhibits and workshops of local artists.
On Thursday the 24th, Creekside staff and volunteers are welcoming people onto the site between 10am and 12 midday and then again from 2pm until 4:30pm.
As well as finding out about Creekside, what we do and how you can get involved, we will also have exhibits from the following local artists:
Paul Prestidge - artist (and Creekside conservation volunteer) who has been living in Deptford for over 45 years.
Angela McMahon - artist and trained geologist and hydrogeologist who has exhibited all over, including for Lewisham London Borough of Culture.
Julia Celeste Brunt - artist inspired to produce prints after her Low Tide Walk in Deptford Creek.
To visit the artist exhibits you do not need a ticket and can drop in during our opening times above and on Friday and Saturday.
During the afternoon we also have Margarita Novikova delivering a workshop: Noise for a Cleaner Planet: Sound, Story & Sustainability
Thursday 24th July, 14:30–16:30 - Ticketed Activity - See below.
Join us at Creekside Discovery Centre for a playful, family-friendly participatory creative workshop transforming waste into music!
Together, we’ll explore the hidden sounds of discarded materials, using storytelling, body percussion, and group games to create short sound pieces inspired by our environment.
This family-friendly workshop invites participants of all ages to explore environmental themes through sound and creativity. Led by artist Margarita Novikova, Noise for a Cleaner Planet encourages everyone to rethink rubbish and reconnect with nature by transforming discarded materials and found objects into musical instruments.
Before the session, you’ll have the chance to prepare some waste materials to bring along, making the experience even more hands-on and personal. During the workshop, we’ll use body percussion, storytelling, and group games to discover the hidden sounds within everyday objects that might otherwise be thrown away.
The workshop will include:
-
Fun warm-up games using body percussion to get everyone connected and ready to create together
-
Sonic exploration, crafting simple but unique instruments from discarded materials brought by participants
-
Storytelling and group discussions about our relationship with waste, sustainability, and the environment
-
Collaborative composition, where small groups create short sound pieces inspired by their stories
-
A final performance to share our creations and the stories behind them
All materials are provided, and no previous musical experience is needed — just bring your curiosity and imagination!
The sounds and stories created during the workshop will be recorded and featured in an online sound installation, helping to amplify your voices and inspire others to think differently about waste and sustainability.
Noise for a Cleaner Planet is part of the Deptford X festival, celebrating creativity and community action in Lewisham.
