Cityscapes in Clay - Sunday 11th October 2026

To accompany the Clay in Vivo exhibition at APT Gallery, artist Harriet Hellman will lead a creative workshop on the banks of Deptford Creek.

Participants are invited to build a temporary city of cairns using raw clay, inspired by the changing river environment. At low tide, the group will enter the creek in waders to place their sculptures in the landscape, creating a collective artwork that will be gradually transformed by the returning tide.

Using raw clay as a bridge between ecology and art, Harriet will encourage participants to look at familiar materials in new ways and explore ideas of creativity, change and impermanence.

The workshop will also include a guided river exploration with a Creekside conservationist. Participants will get down onto the creek bed, explore the ecology of this unique urban waterway and wade into its natural and social histories.

No previous artistic experience is needed. Following the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to visit Clay in Vivo at APT Gallery, which will be opened especially for the group.
