Urban Wildflowers in Spring – Saturday 11th May
10:00 am - 13.00 pm Inner London has an exciting, interesting and diverse wild flora which is greatly unappreciated. Creekside Discovery Centre in Deptford is particularly diverse due to the focus we bring to local wildflowers and the way we manage the site. Wildflowers originating from all around the world grow here. Getting to know wildflowers is also about getting to know places. Every place has its own distinctive wild flora; a result of how people have treated the environment over generations. And new species are turning up all the time! In this workshop we shall be looking at the wonderful diversity of wildflowers that live here in Deptford. We shall explore methods of identifying wildflowers and consider why they live in the places that they do. Topics covered: • What is a wildflower (this may not be as clear cut to answer as you thought!) • Introduction to practical techniques for identifying wildflowers • Practical session identifying spring wildflowers onsite at Creekside Discovery Centre • Why plants grow where they do and the importance of the history of a place Elements of this activity: • Welcome and introductory presentation • Guided tour onsite at Creekside Discovery Centre • Observations of plants onsite with use of a hand lens • Practice using books and keys to reach an identification conclusion • A practical group activity with leader assistance • Informal discussion • Tea and coffee will be provided during a 20 minute break By the end of this activity you will be able to: • Recognise a variety of spring wildflowers currently blooming in the local area • Begin developing a toolbox of skills for wildflower identification • Enjoy an increased awareness of local wildflowers, appreciating the factors which influence their success or failure No prior knowledge of the subject is required. Please note this workshop is not for ecology or management professionals. There will be further sessions on summer and autumn wildflowers during the year.
