Creak – Saturday 2 November FULLY BOOKED
Family event for ages 8+ Starting at the Discovery Centre and taking place in and around the historic Deptford Creek, this is a once in a lifetime chance to explore the river alongside the Victorian treasure hunters known as the Toshers. Waders provided! By Mira Dovreni Directed by Ros Philips Music by Simon Spencer Hyde Costume Design by Laura Heinl Stage Management Amber Reece-Greenhalgh Created with the cast: Charlie Foloronsho, Simon Spencer-Hyde, Mira Dovreni From the creators of award-winning shows including The Bitches Ball, The Missionary’s Position, Etherdome and How To Be Immortal comes another show exploring a famously forgotten true history: The Toshers. In the 18th Century a whole community worked under the streets of London, roaming through the 1000 miles of tunnels, drains and rivers buried under the city, looking for lost valuables and making a living selling them above ground. The Toshers’ lives were extreme in every way – they worked in pitch dark, had to be ready to run (or swim) for it if there was a flash flood, they had to dodge the frequent methane gas explosions as well as avoid the packs of wild rats lurking round corners. And to cap it all police paid informers 5 shillings to ‘snitch on a tosher’. But the rewards were great – especially for anyone who discovered the ultimate treasure - the Tosheroon. CREAK is a new site-specific show for grown-ups and the over 8s, with music, mud and urban myths. Based on the living memory of the great-great-granddaughter of a Deptford tosher, Penny Dreadful take the audience on a trip through the Creek in search of a treasure that will change their lives for good. But they are not the only ones looking… This is a family activity so grown-ups come along and join in the fun with your children.
