Primary

What can my class do at the Centre?

You can choose to do anything from collecting shrimps to testing water, or studying Tudor shipbuilding to writing a 'watery' poem.

All sessions are led by our trained staff to ensure you have the best and safest visit possible.

Sessions are designed to be suitable for the age and ability of your class.

For example:
Nursery and reception children will have a great time finding out about the Creek animals using our floating classroom.

Years 2-4 upwards can explore further by collecting samples from the Creek's foreshore.

Older children can put on a pair of the Centre's waders and study aquatic creatures, use dataloggers etc. as they wade in the shallow riverbed.

What area of the curriculum do you cover?

Here are some of the sessions we run:

Ecology
Come and study all aspects of the river environment

Habitats
Where and how plants and animals live in the Creek, includes food chains and energy flow.

Why are flounders flat?
How animals and plants are adapted to living in the Creek.

Caring for the Creek
How we all can look after and improve the river for everyone who lives here.

Plants
Find out why they need roots and leaves etc. and what they need to grow.

Geography
The Creek is the perfect place to study many aspects of rivers, water, the land use and development of the area.

Rivers and the water cycle
What features can we find in the river? Where does the river water come from? How did the Creek get to be like it is today?

Investigating Creekside
How the Creek fits into the local area, how we affect the river and how we can manage it for the future.

History
The Creek's rich history (Francis Drake landed in Deptford having circled the globe) makes it an excellent place to study the past. Using objects found in the Creek, historical documents, maps etc.
We will explore
What it was like to live on the Creek in the past.
What were the effects of Tudor exploration?

ITC
We are also pioneering the use of ITC in outdoor activities including use of laptops, computer microscopes, dataloggers, digital cameras, and online information resources etc. These will enhance the value of your visit and support work back at school.

Other subjects:
We can run sessions based on a variety of other subjects e.g. creative writing, art and craft, maths etc. Please contact us to discuss your needs.

Back at school

To ensure your visit is more than just a one off day trip, we are supporting extension work by developing 'follow up' activities, selling Creek posters, publications and also by having a website, which contains extra information for use back in class.

Discovering the Creek is an exciting and challenging experience. We offer your class the chance to have a memorable adventure in the heart of London.

Please contact us to find out more about our prices, availability of places and to book your trip.
